From theory to practice: the 5 indispensable competences in your company
Hello!
The five most desired competences in the corporate world. In two previous articles, we started talking about this topic, which comes from a recent survey carried out by Michael Page. We saw that there is a synergy, a complementarity between these competences: teamwork, emotional intelligence/control of emotions, resilience/resistance to stress, communication skills and, finally, proactivity.
We know that each of us has one or more of these potentially stronger skills in our behavioural profile. And we know that, just as we can develop new skills, we can also improve those that we have identified (either through constructive feedback or a performance appraisal) that need to be developed. The question is: what can be done to develop or improve these skills?
I'm a firm believer in the ability of human beings to be better every day. This attitude dignifies us as thinking beings and communicators and sets us apart from others when we do it with conviction. In this way, we can consider some possibilities, attitudes and actions to develop our competences or enhance them.
Shall we?
1st Good listening - Hearing criticism is never easy, really. But believe me, it's just as hard to make it! So, when your manager is pointing out an attitude that has resulted in something inappropriate, listen carefully. Try to break down the barriers of pride and be open to what is being said, without preconceived concepts or ready-made answers. Just listen! It will certainly make sense for you to listen and reflect on what they are saying.
2nd Read! The habit of reading, as well as favouring richer, more reflective and elaborate thinking, will help to develop your ability to communicate fluently and clearly. You will become more confident and assertive, boosting your self-confidence and your ability to point out improvements or defend a plan of action.
3º Observe your surroundings. Try to be with and socialise with people you admire and who are good for you, whether it's because of the way they talk, the values they have in common or because they have a skill or competence that you see in them. It's in the midst of good people that we become better!
4th Reflect, always! The act of reflecting on a given situation makes us see possibilities that, at the time we were faced with them, we didn't manage to do any better. And we're constantly left with that feeling of "I should have said such and such a thing!", "I should have done it in such and such a way!". The past is an excellent teacher! To reflect is to evaluate with caution and moderation. Without forgetting that there should be no personal accusations. Just a pause for reflection and reframing!
And last but not least, get to know yourself! As adaptable human beings, we need small adjustments and repositioning every day. So the tip is: get counselling! It's safe, meaningful and will allow you to learn much more about yourself than you realise.
Let's do it!
A fraternal hug,
Milka Rabêlo
